From a 1988 concert, in which Larry performs some of his famous guitar solos. You'll hear those from: - The theme to the television series "Hill Street Blues" - Kid Charlemagne (Steely Dan composition) - Don't Take Me Alive (another Steely Dan composition) - Put It Where You Want It (The Crusaders).

Being aware of the scales for each chord (which we covered in the last lesson) makes it easier to identify - just a hair in advance - which notes will be good to land on in the next chord. It's kind of like reading music on the page: you're playing one measure but always reading ahead by a bar or two so that you know what's coming. That's what should be happening in your mind as you improvise - you're living in the moment but thinking a little bit ahead too.
In Novemeber 2008, Larry Carlton came to do a workshop for Guitar Getaways and The Guitar Institute. He generously gave me a short interview to share with you good people who visit my web site. I also got to play one of his most famous songs with him at the end of his clinic. What an honor. And he a totally cool down to earth dude! This was the first time I got to interview one of my childhood guitar hero's and I must admit I was a bit nervous, and I forgot most of the questions I wanted to ask, so it's not the most insightful interview ever, but I hope to meet him again this year and get a better one! Interveiwed by Justin Sandercoe. Larry has an awesome web site at: www.larrycarlton.com Many more interviews, more info as well as hundreds of free lessons at www.justinguitar.com Thanks and take care, J
